ROOM A large scale composition completed in December 2011 which takes and develops the premise of Alvin Lucier's iconic 1969 sound work "I am sitting in a room", turning the speaking voice into instruments of a virtual orchestra in the digital studio. Constructed in layers that interweave and develop over time and throughout the space in which they are heard, each audition is unique as the listener moves around within the soundscape. Firmly connected to history and memory, this music examines the relations between the remembered, learned and imagined, as fleeting glimpses of continually shifting soundworlds encircle each other. This is the largest experiment I have conducted to date involving the use of spatialisation of sound sources to create a work that unfolds in radically different ways according to the position of the listener and which permits a physical route through the music as though it were a physical structure whose temporal evolution can therefore be witnessed in widely differing ways on each subsequent audition, dependent on the listener's route and speed of travel through and around the space during the performance. First performance took place on 12 December 2011, commissioned by the John Hansard Gallery in conjunction with exhibition of the work of conceptual artist, Terry Smith: Parallax. Hardware utilised for performance comprised MacBook Pro with Logic 8, firewire connection to 4 stereo output audio interface, two stereo and two dual stereo amplifiers, 12 loudspeakers. The forty track output is a pre-mixed (fixed) amalgam of audio and MIDI, where certain elements of the heard audio are also the raw material for software instruments, combining vocal and percussive timbres. Some further live mixing is generally required, to accommodate variations between acoustics of individual spaces in which the work is heard. Ideal physical space for performance is a series of large connected or adjacent rooms such as an art gallery or other multi-area meeting place. Composition duration is 38 minutes and the work is in three continuous sections. This audio file is a stereo bounce of the entire composition (mp3 format due to size of higher quality audio).
